Double, Double, Toil and Trouble
The GIST: Welcome to spook central! Halloween brought out the best – and worst – in some of our fave athletes.
What SERIOUSLY Not to Wear: For Halloween, Olympic snowboarder Shaun White dressed as Simple Jack, a character with disabilities from the 2008 movie Tropic Thunder. TF man!? The Special Olympics was quick to call White out for the VERY questionable choice. Shaun deleted the pic and posted an apology on his IG, but TBH, we're not sure it's enough. Halloween is supposed to be fun for everyone and it’s really not hard to find a costume that doesn't hurt or offend.
Hallo-welcome to the Family: If you see only one athlete costume, let it be this one: Ottawa Senators’ Matt Duchene and his gf Ashley Grossaint absolutely killed theHalloween game and announced a bun in the oven at the same time! Check out their adorbs skeleton costume and pregnancy announcement here.
Wheelin’ and Dealin’: This young Chicago Blackhawks fan didn’t let his muscle disorder stop him from enjoying Halloween. You gotta check out his 11/10 hockey bench costume that he built around his wheelchair. Who else was riding the pine with him? None other than Blackhawks star forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews(pronounced TAYVZ). Gosh, you just gotta love sports. Want more Halloween hockey? Look no further than this jokes scare video from the Toronto Maple Leafs. You’re gonna want to watch until the end: Leafs star Auston Matthews lets out one HELLUVA shriek that’s definitely gonna hit meme-status.
Honestly Maryland, Figure Your Sh!t Out
The GIST: The University of Maryland’s Athletic Department is in complete and utter shambles. Why? Because they suspended, reinstated, then fired their head football coach, DJ Durkin, following the death of one of his freshman football players in June.
WTF happened?: During an intense workout with the University of Maryland Terrapins football team on May 29th, 19-year-old freshman, Jordan McNair, collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. His body temperature was 106 degrees. Two weeks later, McNair died of heatstroke. Absolutely heartbreaking.
The report: Following McNair’s completely avoidable death, a report was released accusing head coach DJ Durkin and strength coach Rick Court of fostering a dysfunctional, toxic and abusive culture. While Court was fired, Durkin was put on paid leave (yes a kid DIED and the head coach was still paid) while the university’s board of regents, and its hand-picked commission, investigated the school’s football culture.
Fast-forward to Tuesday: After the investigation, the board announced itsrecommendation to reinstate coach Durkin. The report claimed that Durkin was not given the “proper training” to do his job as a first-time head coach. However, we’re calling BS. You don’t just become a head coach overnight - Durkin prepped for this gig his whole adult life. He also trained under Jim Harbaugh, a high-profile coach who just happened to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013.
The backlash: As expected, there was huge backlash from the media and fans. Thepresident of the university, Wallace Loh, vehemently disagreed with therecommendation, so much so that he announced he will be retiring in June. McNair’s teammates were also disappointed with at least three players walking out of a team meeting with Durkin. Finally, McNair’s father said he felt “like I’ve been punched in thestomach, and somebody spit in my face” when he heard about the decision.
Yesterday: In a stunning turn of events, Maryland was like, “JK, Durkin you’re actually fired” because of all of the backlash they received. Like, could nobody have foreseen this coming and just NOT reinstated Durkin in the first place? Just ridiculous. Loh will now be spending his final months as president advancing the needed reforms in Maryland’s athletic department to prioritize the safety and well-being of their students. Here’s to positive change.
GIST Some Other Sh!t you Should Know
- Our Canadian women continue to make her-story and we could not be more proud. On Tuesday, Canada finished fourth in the women’s team finals at the artistic gymnastics World Championships hosted in Qatar. It’s the best result Canada has ever had. YASSS! Shout out to the movie Stick It for making us totally obsessed with gymnastics as awkward tweens.
- If the Halloween costumes and scares didn’t get you smiling/loling, we promise thatthis MLB bad lip reading video will. LOL. We honestly could watch these videos all day.
- Yesterday afternoon, Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia snapped at a reporterfor their posture during a press conference telling them to “have a little respect.” Just a little bit.
