Billie Jean is Not My Lover
The GIST: The final grand slam tournament of the tennis season, the US Open, is well underway, and to say it’s been entertaining would be an understatement.
What you Gotta Know: The GOAT, Serena Williams, is not disappointing. In her first US Open since having her adorable daughter in early September 2017, Williams is rocking her tutu and dancing into the quarter-finals. The road to the quarter-finals wasn’t easy for Williams - it even included an emotional win against her sister, Venus. Still, the remaining competition is fierce with boss babes like defending champ, Sloane Stephens, still #inthemix. Meanwhile on the men’s side of the house, in a startling change of events, world No. 2, Roger Federer, has been sent packing. Late last night (no seriously, the match ended at 12:53am EST), world No. 55, John Millman, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in tennis history beating R-Fed 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6. Simply SHOCKING!!! With this upset, world No. 1, Rafael Nadal, is the undisputed favourite to win the US Open. Unfortunately, no Canadians remain in the tournament. Welp.
The Dah-rama: Okay. In case you don’t follow us on Instagram or Twitter (yes that’s a plug - go follow us!), last week, French tennis player, Alize Cornet, was charged with an “unsportsmanlike” code violation for changing her shirt while on the court. Following a heat break, Cornet came back onto the tennis court with her shirt on backward. When she noticed, she fixed it, and while doing so, exposed her sports bra for maybe ten seconds. Oh my gosh, the indecency!!! *rolls eyes*. Male players frequently change their shirts between games with no problems. Of course, a social media sh!t storm ensued with many calling the rule sexist. The good news? The US Open dropped the code violation and are now looking to change the policy.
Are You Ready For Some Football?!
The GIST: Ah September, a magical time of year complete with pumpkin spice lattes, back-to-school shopping, and FOOTBALL! It’s time to get fired up people - The NFL starts this Thursday, September 6th.
What you Need to Know: Here’s #thegist of the key things you gotta know heading into the 2018/19 NFL season:
- The reigning Super Bowl Champions are the Philadelphia Eagles who beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in February.
- On the other hand, the Cleveland Browns are the duff of the NFL, going a winless 0-16 in last season. Womp.
-There have been some record-setting contracts signed this offseason. Most notably, Green Bay Packers star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, is now the highest-paid player in the NFL after signing a $134M USD four-year contract extension. Chill, chill, chillll. This last name may sound familiar to you because Jordan Rodgers, who won JoJo Fletcher’s season of The Bachelorette, is Aaron’s brother. But, the hot gossip is that the brothers aren’t on good terms.
- Check out our Guide to Football and our Guide to Fantasy Football if you want to brush up on your football knowledge before the season kicks off. We’ve got you.
True Patriot Love, in All of Us Command
The GIST: Our Canadian hunnies did us so proud last week, coming in third at the Women’s Baseball World Cup hosted in Florida. O Canada, indeed!
Hey Batter Batter, Hey Batter Batter Swing: Those girls just did their thing. In last Friday’s bronze medal match, Canada won in a dramatic fashion beating the USA 8-5 in the tenth inning. Yep, this was a doozy of a game that went into extras (pppssttt: a baseball game has nine innings). Canada’s baseball team is ranked No. 2 in the world, and has medalled in six of the eight Word Cup tournaments. Our team is packed with young, up-and-coming talent, so if this tournament has showed us anything, it’s that Canada will continue to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
GIST some Other sh!t you Should Know
- Puppies, puppies, PUPPIES!!! For the second year in a row, six shelter doggos have replaced the standard ball girls and boys at the Brazilian Open tennis tournament. Have a look at the cutest and goodest puppers here.
- The Toronto Blue Jays were not chillin’ this long weekend! Most notably, the Jays traded their 2015 American League MVP, third baseman Josh Donaldson, to the Cleveland Indians (SMDH at Cleveland’s team name). The 32-year-old, also known as the “Bringer of Rain”, has basically been OOO since May due to a nagging calf injury. We think this is a good trade for the Jays, but we’re gonna miss the dude. Learn more about the trade here.
- “To put it really simple: If you don’t respect women’s basketball, you’re a joke.” A to the freakin’ men! Do yourself a favour and read this Players’ Tribune piece on women’s basketball by superstar NBA point guard, Isaiah Thomas.

Thursday: The NFL FOOTBALL SEASON STARTS - HYFR! The NFL generally plays one game on Thursday, 14 on Sunday (they call it football Sunday for a reason) and one game on Monday. On Thursday at 8:20pm EST, it’s the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Atlanta Falcons. Battle of the birds.
