Extra Maple Syrup, Please

The GIST: Yesterday, our Canadian gal, Brooke Henderson, won the CP Women’s Open Canadian golf tournament in Regina, Saskatchewan, finishing with a 21-underpar score cumulative over four rounds. YAS KWEEN, get it!

The Her-story: Yesterday’s tournament win was a BFD because Henderson became the first Canadian woman to win the tournament since 1973 AND just the fourth Canadian to win a LPGA or PGA Tour event on Canadian soil since 1950. This win also marked Henderson’s second tour win of the season and seventh in her career. What makes these records even more impressive is that Henderson is ONLY 20-YEARS-OLD!!! At 20, the only records we were breaking were how many hours in a row we could watch Netflix. But actually, Henderson is something special. Watch her v emotional (get the tissues ready) post-game interview here. We’re not crying, you’re crying.

I Only Love My Bed and My Momma, I'm Sorry

The GIST: The final major tennis tournament of the season, the US Open, starts today and it’s sure to be a doozy.

All Eyes on Serena:  After a week chock-full of controversy  surrounding Serena Williams’ French Open “catsuit,” all eyes are on the #GOAT  to see how she can fare on her home soil. As you may know, Williams just came back to tennis this March after having serious complications  giving birth to the cutest baby girl  in September. When Williams stopped playing she was ranked No. 1 in the world. However, when she came back to the WTA, she was ranked No. 453.  *sigh*      Mama, I Love You : What happened with Williams’ ranking really frustrated us. It also prompted us to think about motherhood and maternity leave in sport in general. Unfortunately, many female athletes have to choose between motherhood and being an athlete. If athletes choose to come back to sport after giving birth, it is not usually supported by fair maternity leave policies. So, we decided to dive deeper into the conundrum of motherhood and mat leave in sports. Be sure to check out The GIST’s Deep Dive  on Motherhood & Maternity Leave for Athletes here .

This is What Dreams Are Made Of!

The GIST: The NFL season starts on September 6th and we are just about as excited for football as we are to hear that MTV’s The Hills is coming back on the air. And, with football season, comes fantasy football.

Hey Now, Hey Now: You may be thinking WTF is fantasy football… and why can’t all of the office bros stop talking about it?! Don’t fret GISTers – as requested by popular demand, we wrote a GIST’s Guide to Fantasy Football. We give you the deets on what fantasy is, how to play, and tips and tricks for your own league. Sometimes joining a fantasy football league can be a wee bit intimidating and confusing (at least it is for us), but we promise you this guide will help you kick some @$$. You can check it out here.

GIST some Other sh!t you Should Know

- The Toronto Blue Jays have been – well, we’re not gonna sugar coat it – pretty bad this season. But, we FINALLY have some good news to report! Yesterday, Blue Jays slugger, Kendrys Morales, set a franchise record when he hit a home run for the seventh consecutive game. OH, BABY!!! Watch his absolute laser of a homer here.

- We didn’t think it could happen, but after this weekend, we love NBA superstar and Golden State Warriors point guard, Steph Curry, even more than we already did. Why? Check out this Players Tribune piece where Curry talks about the need for gender equity… including pay equity. Our favourite line has got to be: “And so eventually we can get to a place where the women’s game, it isn’t ‘women’s basketball.’ It’s just basketball. Played by women, and celebrated by everyone.”

- You won’t believe the sport that the seventh highest-paid woman in sports plays.

- When the going gets tough… the tough GET GOIN’. Watch the Vancouver Whitecaps FC MLS soccer team score three unanswered goals in ten minutes to win 3-2 against the San Jose Earthquakes.

- Finally, shout out to Breanna Stewart for winning the WNBA’s MVP Award. Stewart finished second in scoring this year and led her team, the Seattle Storm, to the league’s best record. Seattle is currently playing in the semi-finals against the Phoenix Mercury. Get after it, Bre!

Get it in the Cal.

Monday & Tuesday: As mentioned, the US Open tennis tournament starts today! And, we’ve got some v promising Canadian talent #inthemix playing their opening match on Monday and Tuesday. Check out who’s reppin’ the red and white here.

Saturday: Toronto FC is hosting the Los Angeles FC at 8 p.m. on the first day of September. YES, you read that right, the first day of September is on Saturday... where TF has the summer gone?!
